Water Stories: Art and the Story of Our Water

Where: Valmont Park (near the Pump Track and Dog Park), 5123-5275 Valmont Rd, Boulder, CO 80301

Families are invited to use art to explore water education and activism at this bilingual event! We use art to connect people to new ideas, to learn, and to speak out about issues that are important to us. Hear from artists about how they have used art to educate others about environmental topics and advocate for the protection of this precious resource. There will be a free puppet show and art supplies available for all attendees to create their own piece of art that will be featured on the Cool Boulder website.

The Schedule

• 12:00-2:00pm: Create artwork, talk to local artists, and enjoy free snacks
• 12:30-1:00pm: Local artists reflect on the role of art in education and advocacy
• 1:15pm: “Somos Gardianes del Agua” by Xicano Puppet Theater (Spanish show)
• 1:30pm: “We are the Water Protectors” by Xicano Puppet Theater (English show)

The Activities

• Free art supplies will be provided for attendees to create their own piece of art to communicate something they’ve learned or advocate for a water issue that is important to them. Interested attendees can have their artwork posted on the Cool Boulder website.
• Xicano Puppet Theater will present in both English and Spanish: We are the Water Protectors (Somos Gardianes del Agua).
• Local artists will speak about their approach to public art and the role of art in advocacy, education, and connection.
• Light snacks and refreshments will be provided.

The Artists

• Gregory Fields is the artist who created “Water Trail,” a new public art sculpture at Valmont Park that tells the story of water as it falls from the clouds, runs down the mountains, flows through the human-built environment into the rain garden, and returns purified back to the natural world.
• Catie Michel is an artist, scientific illustrator, and muralist based in and originally from Denver. Her background in animal science, marine biology, and field research grounds her creative work in observation and exploration. In addition to volunteering as a seasonal bird bander, she teaches science illustration and incorporates experiential engagement with nature in her creative work.
• Jessica Moon is a multidisciplinary artist of Latin and diasporic heritage, whose work explores environmental conservation, cultural identity, and the human-nature connection. Influenced by her global experiences with the U.S. Peace Corps and the United Nations, she creates murals, paintings, and installations that spark dialogue through vibrant storytelling and unconventional materials.
• Xicano Puppet Theater helps youth reconnect with their Indigenous roots. Xochimilco Corona, along with her daughter Denise, are out to carry on the legacy of storytelling. They will use their puppets to tell a story, “Water Protectors.”

Horario

• 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM: Crea arte, interactúa con artistas locales y disfruta de refrigerios gratuitos.
• 12:30 PM – 1:00 PM: Escucha a los artistas locales hablar sobre su enfoque del arte público y sus ideas sobre el papel del arte en la defensa, la educación y la conexión comunitaria.

Actividades

• Tendremos materiales de arte gratuitos para que los asistentes creen su propia obra de arte, la cual podrán usar para comunicar algo que hayan aprendido o para abogar por un tema relacionado con el agua que sea importante para ellos. Los asistentes que lo deseen podrán publicar sus creaciones en la página web de Cool Boulder.
• Disfrutaremos de una presentación de “Protectores del agua” a cargo del Teatro de Títeres Xicano.
• Artistas locales compartirán sus perspectivas sobre el arte público y el papel del arte en la defensa, la educación y la conexión comunitaria.
• Ofreceremos refrigerios y aperitivos ligeros.

Artistas

• Gregory Fields: Es el artista que creó “Water Trail”, una nueva escultura de arte público en Valmont Park que narra la historia del agua desde que cae de las nubes, corre por las montañas, fluye a través de nuestro entorno y regresa purificada al mundo natural.
• Catie Michel es artista, ilustradora científica y muralista, originaria de Denver y radicada en esa ciudad. Su formación en zootecnia, biología marina e investigación de campo fundamenta su trabajo creativo en la observación y la exploración. Además de ser voluntaria anilladora de aves estacional, imparte clases de ilustración científica e incorpora la interacción experiencial con la naturaleza en su trabajo creativo.
• Jessica Moon es una artista multidisciplinaria de ascendencia latina y diaspórica, cuyo trabajo explora la conservación ambiental, la identidad cultural y la conexión entre el ser humano y la naturaleza. Influenciada por sus experiencias globales con el Cuerpo de Paz de los Estados Unidos y las Naciones Unidas, crea murales, pinturas e instalaciones que fomentan el diálogo a través de una narrativa vibrante y materiales poco convencionales.
• Teatro de Títeres Xicano: Esta agrupación ayuda a los jóvenes a reconectarse con sus raíces indígenas. Xochimilco Corona, junto con su hija Denise, desean continuar el legado de la narración de cuentos a través de sus marionetas. En este evento, presentarán la obra “Protectores del agua”.
