Winter Watering Tips

Cold dry winter days mean thirsty plants. Follow these winter watering tips to water wisely.

  • Water one to two times per month from November to April during extended warmer dry periods without snow cover when air and soil temperatures are above 40 degrees F.
  • Apply water mid-day so it will have time to soak in before possible freezing at night.
  • Using a hose end sprinkler or watering wand, hand water trees, shrubs, lawns, and perennials to prevent root damage.
  • Water slowly so it can soak down to the roots.
  • Water newly planted lawns, trees, shrubs and flowers.
  • Water your lawn areas, shrubs, and trees in sunny, windy and exposed areas.
  • Water plants receiving excess reflected heat from buildings, walls, and fences.
  • After use, detach and drain hose to prevent freezing.
  • Do not apply fertilizers during winter months.
  • Avoid using salt or other de-icers around your lawn and gardens.
